Noise Ordinance in Fairfax County: Time for Teeth This Christmas?

Your neighbors will have to keep their holiday cheer to acceptable levels under a new measure in front of Fairfax County officials.

On Tuesday, the board of supervisors will consider setting a December public hearing and final vote on a new noise ordinance. The existing ordinance is being scrapped over constitutional questions that could prevent holiday-season enforcement.

The new ordinance notes you shouldn't suffer your neighbor's noise if you've closed your doors and windows, according to a draft provided to supervisors. There are specific stipulations on overnight yard maintenance, trash collection and other matters.

A comprehensive planning update is coming for a wide range of issues in the county code. But this short-term measure is needed so that the police department can respond to noise complaints in neighborhoods this season, according to a recommendation from county staff.

In 2012, police received an average of 152 calls per month due to loud parties.
