Oxford Academy to Offer Gangnam Style Korean Language Course on Saturday

The free course will teach adults how to read and write in Korean.

Annandale’s Oxford Academy is offering a unique free Korean-language course this weekend geared toward helping adults learn how to speak Korean influenced by the viral song and video “Gangnam Style” by Korean pop singer PSY.

On Saturday, Oct. 6 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., beginners can learn how to speak, read, and write in Korean at the school, which is located at 7700 Little River Tpke. According to a news release, the course is intended to teach Korean “while gaining insight about the emergence of K-Pop and the Gangnam style sensation” and to “increase students’ knowledge base on Korean but also to perform beginning-level Korean language functions at their own pace.”

“I am excited that K-pop is getting greater international recognition and can be used as a creative tool to educate others about different aspects of the Korean culture,” said Soo Yee, M.Ed, CHES, Korean American and founder and executive director of Oxford Academy of Annandale in the release. “I believe education is a tool for people of all ages to gain more insight on various cultures, which is why I decided to launch this class for adults looking to work in Korea or looking to learn the language.”

The class will be taught by Oxford’s Master Kim, a 10-year Korean language expert who worked at the Defense Language Institute in California.

Oxford Academy previously held a Korean Gangnam-style class open house in September, but this will be the first time the class is offered for free. Additional classes will cost about $50 for a two-our class on Saturdays.

For more information about the class, residents can contact Mabinty A. Koroma or Soo Yee at info@oxfordacademia.com.
