Annandale Swim and Tennis Swim Team Swims to Raise Funds for Local Charity

The team swam to raise funds for the Annandale Christian Community for Action.

Last Thursday, 40 kids jumped in the pool and swam for two and a half hours for Annandale Swim and Tennis Swim Team's Annual Swim-A-Thon.

The Swim-A-Thon began in 1998 and gives kids a chance to give back to the community, Kathy Nary said.  Each year, the team chooses a charity or cause that holds a special meaning for the team and swims to raise money for that cause.

"One year we had a member who had family members who had been severely burned and we swam for the Shriners Burn Hospital. We swam for the students at Virginia Tech after the shooting. We have raised money for Children's Hospital, breast cancer, American Heart Association, you name it," Nary said in an email to Patch.

This year, the team swam for the Annandale Christian Community for Action to raise money and food for their food pantry. Kids swam for a certain monetary amount per lap or flat donation, and at the same time, the team hosted a food drive to collect non-perishable food items for the food pantry.

"The economy is bad and there are a lot of people struggling," Nary said. "We wanted to help with that."

Nary said the team collected about 15 bags of food and delivered it to the pantry.
Money is still being collected, but at this time the team has raised is close to $1,300. Final tallies will be determined next week. After the event, the team usually awards prizes for the kids who raise the most money and those that stay in the water the longest.
