Lanzone and U.S. Rowing Team Advance to Men's Eight Olympic Final

The Annandale native helped the U.S. men's rowing team finish in first place in heat one on Saturday.

Annandale's Giuseppe Lanzone and the U.S. men's eight rowing team advanced to the men's eight final on day two of the London 2012 Olympics on Saturday.

The U.S. team easily finished first in the men's eight heat one with a time of 5:30.72. Second place Australia finished in 5:32.43 while Poland took third with a time of 5:35.64. Lanzone rowed in seat five.

According to Steve Douglas with the Associated Press, the U.S. men's rowing team is hoping for a repeat of their win in 2004, but they face tough competition from Germany, the reigning champions.

The men's eight final is on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 10:30 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) time. The final will air on NBC 4 Washington at 4:45 p.m. ET. Team USA will compete against the Netherlands, Great Britain, Germany, Canada and Australia in Final A.
