Men's Eight Rowing Misses Out on Olympic Medal

Day five of the London Olympics was not as sweet as day two for Annandale's Giuseppe Lanzone and the U.S. men's eight rowing team who came in fourth place during Wednesday's final.

The U.S. team in heat one on Saturday to qualify for the final, but in the end, Germany won the gold medal with a time of 5:48.75.

Canada took the silver medal with a time of 5:49.98 and Great Britain won the bronze medal with a time of 5:51.18. The U.S. team's finishing time was 5:51.48, three tenths of a second behind Great Britain. The Netherlands and Australia placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

Germany took the lead early in the final and held it comfortably all the way while the U.S. team struggled behind Canada and Great Britain.

This is the first gold medal for Germany in 24 years, according to the Associated Press, Germany had not won the blue-ribbon race in 24 years.
