Scoreboard: Annandale Field Hockey Dominates, Jefferson Football Win Season Opener

A summary of the games from last week and upcoming matches.

School officially started on Tuesday for Fairfax County Public Schools students, but athletics have been in full swing since August. Here's a brief look at where the Atoms and currently stand and the upcoming games for some of the fall sports.

Field Hockey

The Atoms are currently 5-1 this season following a 0-1 loss to Edison High School on Aug. 29. Last month during the Under the Lights Tournament, the Atoms beat Edison 4-0 and dominated their opponents, outscoring them 15-2. The girls play West Potomac High School at 7:30 p.m. at home on Wednesday.

The JV girls team is currently 2-0 following wins over Hayfield Secondary and Edison High School in August. They face West Potomac High School at 6:15 p.m. at home on Wednesday.

Colonials are 1-4-1 after beating Wakefield High School 6-0 on Aug. 27. The Colonials then lost 6-0 to Centreville on Aug. 30. They play Stuart High School tonight at 7:30 p.m. at home.

The JV girls also lost to Centreville 2-4 on Aug. 30, making them 2-2 this season. Their next game is tonight against Stuart High School at 7:30 p.m. at home.

Football

Annandale (0-1) lost their season opener 29-19 to the Fairfax High School Rebels. On Friday, the Rebels struck first, going up 7-0 in the first quarter before the Atoms came back to tie it 7-7 in the second quarter. By halftime, the Rebels were up 14-7 and ultimately scored two additional touchdowns to give them the win. The Atoms face Lake Braddock on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Jefferson (1-0) fared better in their season opener, beating Falls Church 28-12. . Next up, the Colonials face Langley High School on Friday, Sept. 7 at home at 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball

In college sports, the volleyball team beat Cecil (MD) College 3-0 last Saturday in its season opener. The win marks the college's first win as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). NOVA was 13-23 last year as an independent program. The team's first home game is Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Annandale High girls varsity is 2-1 following a 3-2 win over Stuart High School. The girls beat Hayfield 3-0 and lost 2-3 to Marshall during scrimmages in August. The Atoms face Edison tonight at home at 7:15 p.m. The JV team is also 1-0 after beating Stuart 2-1. The JV team lost 0-2 to both Hayfield and Marshall in August.

Jefferson is now 3-1 following a 1-3 loss to Lake Braddock on Aug. 29. The Colonials won two scrimmages in August, beating Edison High School and Falls Church. The girls also beat Wakefield 3-0. Next up, the Colonials face Washington-Lee on Thursday at home at 7:15 p.m. The JV girls are 3-0 this season and also play Washington-Lee on Thursday at home at 6 p.m.
