Springfield Grandmother Takes Home the Gold

Joan Matteson is a Wii bowling aficionado in Senior Olympics.

Joan Matteson, 80, of Springfield has bowled a perfect 300 game in the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) — for the second year in a row.

Competing in the 80-89 year age group, Matteson was up against 20 other Wii bowlers in her age group, according to a news release from the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics. She took home a gold medal, racking up a total score of 827 setting a new NVSO record.

Matteson, a resident of Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield, is a native of  Newburgh, N.Y. Married to Jack Matteson in 1955, she was a military wife for 30 years. With three children and seven grandchildren, she has stayed busy through the years as a Wolf Trap volunteer, travel coordinator for Greenspring residents and a volunteer for many worthwhile endeavors.

Wii bowling is a major activity at Greenspring with many leagues and games played every day, according to Ted Campbell, Greenspring resident and NVSO Wii bowling event director.
