What to Watch for in High School Sports This Weekend

Five must-see high school sporting events around the region this Friday and Saturday.

Annandale -Varsity Wrestling - Saturday, Jan. 14 at 9 a.m.

Annandale wrestler Dane Harlowe (126 lbs.) has emerged as one of the region’s premier grapplers and has contributed heavily to the Atoms’ success this winter. Harlowe has suffered just one loss this season in 27 matches. He and 18-win Annandale host Centreville, Lake Braddock, Lee, South County, Woodson, West Potomac, West Springfield and T.C. Williams on Jan. 14.

West Springfield- Boys & Girls Swim & Dive – Friday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.

West Springfield swimmers and divers have breezed through their completion this year. The Spartans are 5-0 on the season and face their toughest opponent to date in Woodson this Friday at the Lee District RECenter in Franconia.  Woodson is also 5-0 and tallied 241 points in its last outing. With two meets remaining in the regular season, the winner of Saturday’s meet will likely capture the regular season Patriot District title.

Robinson- Girls’ Basketball vs. Oakton – Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The Robinson Rams (9-3) host Oakton in a pivotal Concorde District matchup. Both teams are undefeated in district play and Robinson enters the contest carrying a five-game win streak. Oakton has an unblemished record on the season and is coming off of a dominating 70-33 victory over Chantilly. Robinson hasn’t beaten Oakton in at least six seasons and a win would give the Rams a much needed edge over Oakton in district standings.

Mount Vernon- Girls’ Basketball vs. Stuart - Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

With a win over Stuart, Mount Vernon (11-1) can distance itself from Edison and the rest of the National District pack. The Majors, who have scored 70 points or more in their last three contests, are 5-0 in district play and have not lost a game since Dec. 6. Stuart is winless on the season and would love nothing more than to hand Mount Vernon its first district blemish.

Lake Braddock- Boys’ Basketball vs. T.C. Williams – Saturday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

The Bruins host T.C. Williams this Saturday and will go for their tenth victory of the season. Lake Braddock is undefeated in district play with five wins and will face a surging Titan squad that is 3-1 in the month of January. Dylan O’Connor leads the Bruins in scoring this season with 17.3 points per game and has connected on 24 three-pointers.
