18 Days of Summer: Time for Outdoor Exercise
When is the last day of summer? Not until you get some fitness without a gym.
by Greg Hambrick
It’s not that you can’t exercise outside in the dead of winter; you’ll just look like an eskimo or a ball of coats. Today, Wednesday, Sept. 4, there are several opportunities to get out to enjoy the weather and exercise — no insulation necessary.
The last day of summer is Sept. 21. Or, you can look at it this way: The first day of fall is Sept. 22. Patch has found something for you to do each day as we count down until summer passes us by.

Crystal City has two events today. From noon to 1 p.m., there’sOutdoor Zumba at 2121 Crystal Drive Courtyard. The free event offers, “Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves.” For women, there’s also a Zen Around the City cycling event from 7-9 p.m. beginning at 1750 Crystal Drive. Tickets for ZAC are $5.
In other areas of the region, Meetup.com is a good resource for finding outdoor exercise events. The NOVA Free Fitness Boot Camp is from 6:30-7:30 p.m. tonight (and every Monday and Wednesday) at South Run Park in Springfield.
