Update: Monday’s Power Restoration Outlook

Update - 10:45 a.m.: Dominion Virginia Power has posted today's work crews location list. 

As of 10:42 a.m., the company reported 170,183 were still without power across the Northern Virginia power region.

Dominion Virginia Power crews continue to make steady progress toward restoring power to those who lost it late Friday night in the derecho.

As of 5 a.m. Monday, 185,496 customers remained without power across Dominion’s Northern Virginia service area. More than 320,000 across the state had no service.

Among those without power at 5 a.m. according to Dominion’s Interactive Outage Viewer were more than:

• 12,500 in Alexandria
• 27,000 in Arlington
• 84,000 in Fairfax County
• 9,500 in Loudoun County
• 5,500 in Prince William County

As a measure of overnight progress, more than 228,600 in Northern Virginia— more than a quarter of Dominion’s 831,000 Northern Virginia customers — remained without power just before 8 p.m. Sunday. (Updated numbers are posted throughout the day here.)

Late Sunday afternoon, Dominion Virginia Power officials said they expected 80 to 85 percent restoration by the end of Tuesday, and 90 to 95 percent restoration by the end of Thursday. The last customers .

Another Balmy Day Ahead

The high temperature on Monday is expected to be 93 under mostly sunny skies. There is a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms. Overnight, temperatures will drop into the low 70s.

Your Commute

Metro officials said Sunday evening that commuters should allow for extra travel time Monday. Dark traffic signals may cause both confusion and congestion at some intersections.

Drivers are reminded that if they come to an intersection where all traffic signals are not operating, they should treat that intersection as a four-way stop to avoid accidents. WTOP reports police are out enforcing this law.

VRE announced Sunday evening it is planning to operate on its normal schedule Monday.

Communications

Verizon, AT&T and other major telecommunications providers are continuing to wrestle with in the wake of the storm. One of the biggest challenges over the weekend was a power failure at one of the Verizon facilities in Arlington, which made it difficult for some callers to dial 911 in Prince William and Fairfax Counties. 

Residents across Northern Virginia reported being unable to place or receive any calls, emails or text messages on their mobile devices.

State of Emergency

Because of the widespread nature of this storm, utility crews from as far away as Texas, Kansas, Wisconsin and Canada have come to the mid-Atlantic to help with power restoration efforts. Gov. Bob McDonnell said Saturday this is the biggest non-hurricane power outage in the state's history.

Heat Tips

• If you don’t have air conditioning, go somewhere that has it. If you have to, try to stay on the lowest floor of a building and stay out of the sun.
• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated—a key component to keeping yourself cool.
• Dress in light colored, lightweight clothes.
• Try to spend the hottest part of the day in an air-conditioned location, such as your local library, movie theater or mall.
• Check on your elderly neighbors, who are more susceptible to heat-related health problems.
