TJ3Sat Satellite Going into Space, Seminar at NOVA-Annandale, Book Sale

Five things to know in and around Annandale this week.

Whether it's holiday shopping you're interested in or viewing a high school, there's still enough going on in the Burke-area this week to keep you entertained. Here's a look at the Week Ahead.

  1. Students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will make history on Tuesday when NASA launches TJ3Sat satellite into orbit. The satellite is the first satellite built by high school students to be sent into space. Read the full story on the satellite here.
  2. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will meet on Tuesday. The Board will approve grant funding for slate litter prevention and recycling for Clean Fairfax Council, Inc. There will also be a public hearing on an expanded residential permit parking district near Northern Virginia Community College. The full agenda can be found online.
  3. There will be a public meeting on Fairfax County's proposed residential studios zoning ordinance amendment on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Conference Rooms 106/107 in the Herrity Building, located at 12055 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax. Details here.
  4. The Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) will hold an environmentally-themed concert and lecture on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Richard J. Ernst Community Cultural Center Theater (CE Theater). The event is free and open to the public. The keynote lecture, “Climate Change Mitigation and Impacts: Technologies and Policies,” will be given by Dr. Jayant A. Sathaye, a senior scientist, strategic advisor and a founder of the International Energy Studies Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Ca.
  5. There will be a holiday and gift book sale in nearby Burke. The Burke Centre Library's Holiday Used Book Sale starts Monday and ends on Tuesday. Details here.
