Annandale residents Cora Evelyn Mosher and Olive Ann Clarke passed away recently.
Cora Evelyn Mosher, 91, passed away in her sleep on May 5. Mrs. Mosher grew up in the Great Depression era, and went to on to volunteer at the White House in her later years. She had two daughters and two grandchildren. Her funeral service will take place Monday, according to Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home. She was a mother to five children, 13 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. Elizabeth Ann Sievers, 53, of Gaithersburg, MD, passed away on July 24. According to her death notice, Sievers was a "long-time Park Naturalist at Hidden Oaks Nature Center." A celebration of her life will be held on Aug. 25 in Gaithersburg. Cameron Wills Kilby, son of Jim and Ivy Kilby of Annandale, passed away on Aug. 4. A memorial was held on Aug. 11. Claire Orlando Ducker, Jr., retired Fairfax County Firefighter, passed away on June 30. Daniel Evart Nieboer, 73, passed away on July 26.

John C. Pratt, from Springfield, died from injuries sustained in a helicopter crash.
A soldier originally from Springfield, Va. was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, according to a Pentagon release. Chief Warrant Officer 5 John C. Pratt was 51 years old. He died over the weekend in Kabul from injuries he received during the crash. Pratt was in an AH-64 Apache helicopter made by Boeing. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but it does not appear enemy fire was a factor. Another soldier, 26-year-old Capt. John R. Brainard from Maine, was also killed. More than 1,850 people have died in the conflict in Afghanistan since it began. According to the U.S. casualties database run by icasualties.org, 134 of those who have died are from Virginia. An additional 679 Virginia natives have been injured.

Shannon Donley, 48, operated Fertile Plains Meats at Annandale, Reston, Herndon and other area farmers markets.
Shannon Clark Donley, a longtime vendor at the Wakefield Farmers Market, Reston Farmers Market and other local markets, died on May 3 following a car accident near Leesburg. Donley, 48, of Shepherdstown, WV, operated Fertile Plains Meats. He had been a vendor at the Wakefild Farmers Market, which operates Wednesdays in Wakefield Park in Annandale. He recently also opened a stand at the Wednesday Smart Market in Reston. Donley was a seventh-generation farmer, according to an obituary in the Martinsburg (WV) Journal-News. He was also a certified lay speaker at Bethesda United Methodist Church at Molers Crossroads, WV, and a parishioner of New Street United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown. Lesansky was a founding member of Northern Virginia Community College.
"Helene T. Lesansky, 89, a retired economics and sociology professor at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) died of complications related to Parkinson’s disease Jan. 9 at her home in Burke," reported The Washington Post. Lesansky was a founding member of NOVA, teaching there from 1965 until her retirement in 1986. Her survivors include three sons, Henry R. Lesansky of Mount Airy and Lewis Lesansky and Mendel Lesansky, both of Burke.

Long time PTA leader, education advocate died at her home.
Catherine Belter, a long time Fairfax County education advocate, died at her home Saturday. "I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great friend and mentor," said Ramona Morrow, president of the Fairfax County Council of PTAs. "Cathy's efforts on behalf of all children will be remembered here in Fairfax, in Virginia and nationally for years to come." Cathy served as president of the Virginia PTA from 1985 - 87, then served 10 years on the board of the National PTA, before her election to the Fairfax County School Board. She served two terms, 2000 to 2008, as Springfield District representative. She'd also worked part time for Fairfax County Public Library. Services were held Thursday morning at Zion Baptist Church in Fairfax
Family and friends said goodbye to fallen firefighter Horace Christopher “Teddy” Pendergrass at the Zion Baptist Church on Thursday morning. Hundreds of Fairfax County Firefighters and firefighters from as far as New York came to pay their respects. Pendergrass, 49, was a 21-year veteran of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Pendergrass passed away on Saturday at the Crosspointe Fire Station in Fairfax Station. The cause of his death is under investigation, though he is believed to have died of natural causes. Pendergrass leaves behind his two daughters, Christian Adams and Tierra Pendergrass, and his son, Horace Christopher Junior, according to his obituary published for his funeral service. Rowland owned Baskin Robbins for ten years, was well liked by customers.
The store was closed Wednesday, but customers left bouquets, balloons and notes outside the Baskin Robbins in the Twinbrook Shopping Center on Braddock Road in Fairfax. Storeowner George Kevin Rowland died there on Tuesday. He was 56. The retired Army Major will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Rowland's father told Burke Patch his son recently learned his cancer had returned. "He suffered through three different types of cancer and was in remission," said James Rowland. "When he found out he was out of remission, he told his sister he wasn't going to go through that again." Kevin's sister, Deborah Kay, is his twin. Kevin Rowland was born on July 17, 1955.
