The CPA is mostly geared toward residents who live or work in the Greene Hills Estates in Springfield. The program is free to all. Children ages 5-11 years can also particpate. Memorial Day Weekend Events in Northern Virginia

Memorial Day weekend celebrations Friday through Monday in Northern Virginia.

Weird News: Cicadas (Or Not), Naked Strolls, Crows in Closets and Kitty Litter in The Pool

Plus, we tell you where NOT to find your next lawnmower.

Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening somewhere in the area. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Cicadas Everywhere (Or Not): A line has been drawn, and it isn't residents rejecting the D.C. metro label — it's cicadas that have decided they'd rather avoid the congestion inside the Beltway. We've been anxiously anticipating a crazy spring of buzzing cicadas crawling everywhere. Now, some of us are finding the big bugs crawling out of holes and up trees in Fredericksburg, Woodbridge and lower Fairfax County, but others haven't seen any of this year's brood.  Enjoying the Breeze: Manassas City Police have a description of a suspect in …

Where's the Cheapest Gas in Annandale?

You can use this gas price widget to always find the lowest price of the moment. Pro tip: Gas up early this week to save money.

Click here for a full-screen view of the gas price map. If you don't see a map of our local area, click the magnifying glass in the upper right to enter your address. Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …

I have used GasBuddy for years now and the prices are almost always spot on. The MapQuest that is at the top of the page isn't. I filled up last night at $3.50 at the Used Tires gas station on Columbia pike.   more ›

Fairfax County Teachers Will Get Pay Raises

In budget approval, school board members divided on how best to keep teacher pay competitive moving forward.

After months of debate on how to fairly compensate Fairfax teachers and keep pace with salaries in other jurisdictions , the Fairfax County School board voted for a $2.5 billion budget Thursday that will give employees a 2 percent mid-year market-scale adjustment  — making good on a commitment from school board members to provide some sort of compensation relief during this fiscal year. Much of the Fiscal Year 2014 spending plan, which passed on an 8-4 vote, is dedicated to changing demographics and unprecedented student growth — 3,089 students are expected to join the system next year, pushing total enrollment to 184,625. Annandale Spring Carnival Returns June 6

The annual carnival will include rides and games for kids of all ages and other family entertainment.

The 63rd annual Annandale Spring Carnival, which will feature games, rides, food and local entertainment, will open to the community on June 6 and last through June 16. Sponsored by the Annandale Chamber of Commerce and run by Reithoffer Shows, the carnival will return to its previous location in the Kmart parking lot this year. When it opened in 1950, the carnival was held on the property that is now Giant Food. The carnival moved to the property that now holds Kmart and the Kmart owners allowed the Chamber to continue hosting it in the parking lot. Last year, the carnival briefly relocated to the AMF Bowling Lanes parking lot. The move back to Kmart is especially fitting as the carnival will also celebrate its 50th anniversary at that …
