Economist discusses why he’s running as an Independent for Virginia’s 11th congressional District seat.
(Editor's note: One of the greatest powers Americans have is their right to vote. Patch respects that, and wants our readership to be as informed as possible before walking into that voting booth on Nov. 6. This is the third in a series of in-depth interviews with candidates vying for Virginia’s 11th congressional District seat.) Reforming the U.S. government and economy, the effectiveness of Congress and ending partisan gridlock were a few of the topics discussed this week in an interview with Mark Gibson, the Independent candidate for Virginia's 11th congressional District seat. Gibson candidly spoke with Patch from the Starbucks in Springfield Plaza in Springfield. Gibson has $258 cash on-hand for his campaign, compared to $1.5 million …

DeCarlo plans to run for political office every year.
Independent candidate Chris DeCarlo doesn't have a huge campaign war chest, but he says the power of rap, a singular message and the Internet are driving his campaign for election to Virginia's 11th District congressional seat. His Youtube video "How Virginia's 17-Year-Olds Can Stick it to the Man and Fight Political Corruption" has been seen by 25,837 viewers, and a video released five days ago has garnered more than 5,000 views. But will that translate to votes? DeCarlo calls this campaign of running without donations an experiment — just like his previous four campaigns — and has committed himself to running for political office every year. "I think part of the popularity of my videos comes from watching a 53-year-old white guy rapping…

Democratic Congressman made the statement Tuesday to residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield.
Northern Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) said Tuesday that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's recently released comments in a controversial videotape make him "unfit for office." Connolly spoke to about 75 residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield during a campaign appearance. Romney's comments, secretly taped without his knowledge, featured a controversial statement in which he said that 47 percent of the electorate do not pay income taxes and are dependent on the government and consequently support President Obama's candidacy. Connolly characterized the statement as "dangerous." "That's very dangerous thinking, and I think that alone suggests Mitt is not fit for that office," said Connolly…

Retired Army colonel beats Herndon traffic engineer Ken Vaughn with 60-plus percent of the vote. Perkins will face Gerald Connolly in general election for 11th congressional district.
UPDATE: Retired Army Col. Chris Perkins of Lorton has won the GOP primary in the 11th congressional district with about 60 percent of the vote. He will now do battle with incumbent Democrat Congressman Gerald Connolly in November. "I know my words sound almost contrived, but I'm feeling so humble right now," Perkins said as he greeted a house full of well-wishers Tuesday night. "Because all of these people put their faith in me." He thanked his wife Petra for her contributions to the campaign. Gov. Bob McDonnell weighed in Tuesday night with congratulations: "Eleventh district Republicans tonight nominated a great candidate in Chris Perkins," he said in a news release sent out at about 10:45 p.m. "Chris understands the importance of …

Our country is facing serious challenges on many fronts. Our national debt has surpassed 100% of GDP, and our deficit in February set another record - $229 billion of new debt in one month. Despite stealing this money from our future, the unemployment rate remains persistently high at 8.3%. In addition to losing our financial freedom, we also continue to see our individual liberties erode. Amazingly, our current administration now claims that it has the right to kill American citizens without any trial. While I suspect Anwar al-Awlaki was guilty of treason, he still deserved a trial, as the Constitution prescribes: No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in …

Republican Kenneth Vaughn, 44, hopes to challenge Rep. Gerald Connolly for 11th congressional District seat.
Republican Kenneth Vaughn, 44, a traffic engineer who lives in Herndon with his wife and twin sons and originally hails from Texas, is hoping to represent Virginia's 11th congressional District, the seat currently held by Democratic Congressman Gerald Connolly. Vaughn will compete in the Republican primary election June 12 against Chris Perkins and Steven Yeh, the only others currently in the GOP primary race for the 11th congressional District. Connolly doesn't really care about what is on your mind. He is just another politician bent on staying in office, serving his master's will.   more ›
