Residents and local officials gathered for the annual event which also included carols from local students.
More than 75 Annandale residents, local officials and students gathered in Toll House Park Friday evening for the annual tree lighting ceremony. Del. Vivian Watts (D-39th) and Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross offered holiday wishes to the crowd following a moment of silence for those affected by Hurricane Sandy and the typhoon that struck the Philippines Tuesday. The Knights of Columbus Color Corps presented the colors prior to the tree lighting. The Parklawn Pops from Parklawn Elementary School and the Poe Carolers from Poe Middle School led the audience in a round of songs to get attendees in a festive mood. Following the ceremony, attendees gathered at Burke & Herbert Bank for hot beverages, food and conversation. Some residents …

The new Rice and Spice Thai restaurant, located at 6244-K Little River Turnpike just outside of Annandale, will be a vendor this year along with Annandale residents Manny and Maria Alfaro, who will serve Peruvian food like chorizo sandwiches, Peruvian tamales and more. Falls Church High School’s signature coffee, Jaguar Joe, is also back this year. Other cultural dishes from vendors will include foods such as: There will also be Philly cheese…

Annandale is home to several Korean restaurants and businesses.
It’s no secret that Annandale is home to many restaurants, but some residents have told Patch they think the ratio of restaurants to other businesses is disproportionate. Many of the restaurants in the area are Korean or Korean-American owned. (Humorously, the availability of bulgogi in Fairfax County came up at the end of ChokeOnFunny‘s “Fairfax Rap” on YouTube.) In fact, some residents of the D.C. metro area refer to Annandale as “Koreatown,” in part due to Annandale’s relatively dense Korean population (compared to the rest of Fairfax County) and the large number of Korean businesses. The stereotype has divided Annandale residents—something The Washington Post addressed back in 2005. Some residents whom Annandale Patch has spoken to in …

Signage is also a big issue in Annandale, according to code inspectors.
Overcrowding and signage are two of the biggest code violations in Mason District, inspectors with the Fairfax County Department of Code Compliance told business owners and residents at the Annandale Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon last week. According to a presentation by inspectors Charles Forshee and Victoria Dzierzek, the Department of Code Compliance (DCC) enforces codes such as zoning ordinance, building code, property maintenance code, and County codes such as noise, blight and more. Formed in July 2010 as a collaboration between several agencies including the Fairfax County Police Department, the Fairfax County Office of the Fire Marshall and others, the majority of complaints the DCC receives are for multiple occupancy, …
