FCPA seeks nominees for annual Elly Doyle Park Service Awards.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Elly Doyle Park Service Awards. The Fairfax County Park Authority is searching for "unique and giving" individuals and organizations which support local parks through volunteer service, according to its Web site. These awards "recognize volunteers who make outstanding contributions of time and talent to the Fairfax County park system." The Elly Doyle Park Service Award was established in 1988 in recognition of Ellamae Doyle’s many years of service and accomplishment as a member and chairman of the Park Authority Board. Volunteers are needed at Hidden Oaks Nature Center and Hidden Pond Nature Center.
The Fairfax County Park Authority is looking for volunteers to help with watershed clean-up this year at several sites in the county. Volunteers are needed at Annandale's Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Hidden Pond Nature Center and Lake Accotink Park on Saturday, April 6. Additionally, the Park Authority is participating in the Potomac Watershed Cleanup from 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, March 16 and April 6. It’s recommended that all volunteers wear old clothes, boots, and gloves to help. The Park Authority will provide the trash bags. Fairfax County Park Authority needs camp counselors for summer 2013. Here is how to apply.
Looking for a summer job? The Fairfax County Park Authority will be hosting four open calls for Rec-PAC camp employment. The Rec-PAC program will operate camps at 50 elementary school locations around the county on weekdays from July 1 through Aug. 9. During the summer, staff will work at a site daily from 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. or 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The open hire sessions will be held on the first floor of the Herrity Building located at 12055 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax from noon - 4 p.m. on March 20, May 15 and May 29. One special open hire session will be held at Mt. Eagle Elementary School in Alexandria from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. April 17. Money to prevent flooding in lower Huntington, money for libraries, fire stations and parks will be on the ballots for Fairfax County voters in November.
In addition to choosing a president, Fairfax County voters will be deciding on millions in funding for libraries, parks, public safety and stormwater through bond referenda. The four bond issues are: None of the bonds are expected to raise tax rates for residents. If approved by voters, the $30 million stormwater bond will pay to build a levee and pumping station to protect the Huntington neighborhood from flooding. During the past 10 years, three floods have damaged homes, vehicles and other property in this neighborhood, and there are 180 homes in the FEMA-designated floodplain that are at risk in the future. So when are we going to take down the "future home of kingstowne library" sign since it hasn't been listed in the bond for the 9 years I've lived here. I'm sure we're paying money for the sign through some crooked sign leasing deal from the past :)   more ›
