Memorial Day: Don't Drink and Drive, Says New Local Ad Campaign

Unified Prevention Coalition, with support from local police, have launched an advertising campaign in movie theaters in an effort to stop young adults from drinking and driving.

Coming soon to a theater near you: Local advocates and police on the big screen warning moviegoers not to drink and drive. The ads are part of a campaign launched Wednesday by the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County (UPC) and local police to curb drunk driving among young adults in advance of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The ad campaign is part of the UPC's efforts to encourage drivers ages 18 to 24 to not drink and drive. The ads were unveiled Wednesday and shown to students and parents at a UPC-sponsored "Perils of the College Drinking Culture" forum at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Police Looking for Three Men Involved in Home Invasion Near Skyline

The three men allegedly got away with money, jewelry and electronics but no one was injured.

Fairfax County Police are looking for three men they say robbed two men in an Alexandria home Wednesday morning near the Skyline Mall. According to a press release, a 24-year-old Maryland man was awaken by three men – two of them armed with handguns – around 2 a.m. Wednesday who demanded money. An undisclosed amount of money was taken along with some jewelry and electronics. Police did not say in the release how the men gained entrance into the home. The two men inside the home in the 3700 block of North Rosser Street, the second a 45-year-old man, were not injured. Police don’t believe the incident was a random crime. The three men were all described as black, between 25 and 30-years-old and ranged from 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet tall and …

Annandale Man Robbed at Gunpoint on Commons Drive

Toddler uninjured as police now search for two suspects in connection with the incident.

A man was robbed at gunpoint in Annandale last Friday near Commons Drive. According to a news release from the Fairfax County Police Department, the man was removing his toddler from his vehicle around 11:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot in the 4500 block of Commons Drive when two men approached him. The suspects produced a weapon and demanded that the man hand over his money. The suspects later fled. The man and his toddler was not injured, police said. The two suspects are believed to be male, black and between 18 and 25 years old. One suspect was described as tall, clean shaven, muscular build and wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. Fairfax County Police to Get New Police Vehicles

FCPD provided information about the new police cruisers during the recent CAC meeting at Franconia District Police Station.

Fairfax County police officers are saying farewell to their old cruisers as the department purchases 127 Ford Police Interceptor sedans and utility vehicles in FY2013. Retired Lieutenant Chalrie Bond — who is now the director of the logistics and property division for the department — conducted a presentation during a Citizen Advisory Committee meeting in Kingstowne Wednesday. Bond said Ford Motor Vehicles recently discontinued the Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. The 2007 model was the last of its kind. FCPD has 1,500 vehicles — 762 which are assigned to eight stations, including the three stations that serve Annandale, Mason, West Springfield and Franconia. Prescription Drug Abuse on the Rise in Fairfax County, Officials Say

The Unified Prevention Coalition has partnered with the Fairfax County Police Department for an annual "medicine cabinet clean-out" which aims to raise awareness about prescription drug abuse in the county.

Prescription drug abuse is on the rise in Fairfax County and a handful of local organizations are working to put a stop to what the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has classified as an epidemic. Prescription drug abuse is a different problem compared to others in the county, due to its reach and rate of expansion, said Amy Reif, health sector coordinator for the Unified Prevention Coalition (UPC) of Fairfax County, who spoke with reporters Tuesday at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale. According to statistics from UPC, there were 51 drug/poison deaths in Fairfax County in 2011 and deaths by prescription drugs such as fentanyl, hydrocodone, methadone and oxycodone than by cocaine and heroin.  In an effort to curb …

Four Men Charged with Armed Robbery in Annandale

A police officer on patrol interrupted the robbery in progress in the Little River Run Shopping Center on Monday.

Four men from Prince George's County and Charles County in Maryland were charged with armed robbery after a police officer interrupted a transaction in progress Monday in the Little River Run Shopping Center in Annandale. Marion Kenneth Allen, Jr., 22, Cye Adam Penn, 22, Bryant Robinson, 19, and Xavier Hall, 22 were charged with robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and abduction, according to a news release from the Fairfax County Police Department. A 15-year-old boy placed an ad online advertising Nike tennis shoes for sale and agreed to meet a buyer at the shopping center around 10:50 p.m. on Monday, according to the news release. Mason District Station Officer Dinh Talks Recovery, Support at Fundraising Event

Officer Long "Junior" V. Dinh was injured in a head-on car crash in February following a police chase that ended in a single fatality.

After about two months of recovery from injuries sustained following a head-on collision crash, Officer Long V. Dinh Jr. joined Fairfax County police officers, local officials, and community members at a fundraising event Sunday for his first major public appearance since the crash. Dinh, 28, was severely injured in the crash and spent most of March recovering from his injuries which included several broken bones. Dinh was also in a coma for a few days immediately after the collision. During that time, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 77, established a rehabilitation fund to help offset the costs of medical needs. When night falls, lurking in the shadows of the fluorescent lights from a variety of ethnic restaurants are sometimes drug deals, prostitution and drunks. Fundraiser for Mason District Officer Dinh Set for Sunday in Fairfax

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 77 will host a fundraising event Sunday for Mason District Officer Long V. Dinh Jr.'s rehabilitation fund. Dinh was injured in a head-on collision crash in February and was hospitalized for most of last month. All are welcome to attend the fundraiser, which will be Sunday at Hard Times Cafe located at 4069 Chain Bridge Road, in Fairfax from noon to 7 p.m. There will be food specials and a raffle during the event. Hard Times will donate a portion of the night's sales to Dinh and his family. Car Hits Pole, Causes Power Outage in Sleepy Hollow Woods

Residents in the Sleepy Hollow Woods neighborhood lost power for about nine hours, according to Dominion Power.

A single vehicle crash in the Sleepy Hollow Woods neighborhood caused a power outage Sunday that lasted more than nine hours. According to officer Eddy Azcarate, public information officer with the Fairfax County Police, the crash occurred Sunday morning around 10:45 a.m. near the 3900 block of Sleepy Hollow Road. The driver of the vehicle struck a pole not far from where Sleepy Hollow Road intersects with Columbia Pike. More than 300 customers lost power at 12:50 p.m. for nine hours and 11 minutes, said Le-Ha Anderson, manager for media and community relations for Dominion Power. Dominion crews were dispatched to replace the broken pole. Power was restored to all customers by 10:01 p.m., when repairs on the pole were completed, Anderson …
