Officials will sit down soon to discuss how to get kids early education -- and fast.
With more than 800 children on the waiting list for pre-kindergarten services, Fairfax County’s School Board and Board of Supervisors are committed to formulating a plan to solve the problem, they said Tuesday. Head Start provides early education and pre-kindergarten classes to kids from low income families, better preparing them to enter Fairfax County Public Schools. The program is funded by a mix of federal, state and county sources, but sequestration has the Board of Supervisors on edge and the Fiscal Year 2014 budget doesn’t include any funding for expansion of the program. Superintendent from Lubbock, Texas will step in as leader of Fairfax County Public Schools on July 1.
Karen Garza was officially appointed Thursday as the next superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools. Garza, currently the superintendent of the Lubbock Independent School District in Texas, will start July 1. The school board approved Thursday a four-year contract for Garza, through June 30, 2017. The renovations will help alleviate overcrowding and pay for additional technology resources for students.
Renovations at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will move forward this year as planned. The Fairfax County School Board awarded a contract to Henley Construction Company, Inc. Thursday night in the amount of $67,440,000 for the school renovation project. According to an agenda item from Thursday's meeting, the motion to award the contract was put forth by Sandy Evans, who represents Mason District on the board, and was carried unanimously. The total cost of the project is estimated at $90 million and funding for the project will come from the 2011 School Bond Referendum.
