The Fairfax County Planning Commission last week approved an application for a new assisted living facility in the Holmes Run neighborhood. Shelter Group, Inc. submitted an application to build Brightview Senior Living assisted living facility on Gallows Road last year. The facility would be built on four lots of land, approximately 6.36 acres of land located in the Holmes Run neighborhood at 3444, 3450, and 3454 Gallows Road. The single-family homes currently on each of the four lots will be razed. About 1 acre of Gallows Road, not included in the six acres, will also be cut out to create a residential lot. Using two rapid-flashing beacons, pedestrians should be able to safely cross the four-lane street while also alerting drivers of pedestrian presence in the street.
Annandale residents who regularly travel on Gallows Road or who live near Aston Street may have noticed a new pedestrian crosswalk. The crosswalk, which features two beacons with flashing lights on both sides of Gallows Road at Aston Street, is intended to make crossing the street near Woodburn School safer for pedestrians while also alerting drivers from either direction that pedestrians may be present in the street. It was installed in late October, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Resident Sarah Karush said the crosswalk is the result of a year-long grassroots campaign by the Holmes Run Acres neighborhood. Tree preservation, pedestrian safety and increasing neighborhood traffic were some of the concerns raised by residents at Tuesday night’s Mason District Land Use Committee’s presentation on the addition of an assisted living facility to Gallows Road. The proposed 95-room Brightview Senior Living facility would be located at 3450 Gallows Road, across the street from Woodburn Elementary School. Of the 95 rooms, 23 would be memory care apartments in a secured third-floor wing of the facility for patients with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
