Viewfinder: Plant Sale at Green Spring and Little Acorns at Hidden Oaks

The grounds of Green Spring Gardens were turned into an outdoor market during the annual plant sale. The 'Little Acorns' program at Hidden Oaks Nature Center kept the participants entertained on a rainy Monday. The Wakefield Farmers Market continues to provide fresh produce for area residents.

Annandale Viewfinder: Puppet Shows, Jungle Animals, Global Warming and Civil War Weapons

Hidden Oaks Nature Center presented three puppet shows for a large group of children, and Wildlife Ambassadors brought some live jungle animals to George Mason Regional Library. The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Adventures in Learning participants met at John Calvin Presbyterian Church and learned about global warming and Civil War weapons.

Annandale Viewfinder: Irish Music and Dance, Spring Flowers and Learning About Air

The Dirty Pints had the entire audience at St. Alban's Episcopal Church clapping to their lively music, and students from the Boyle School of Irish Dance entertained everyone with their dancing. The Forest Fledglings learned about air at Hidden Oaks Nature Center, and our mild weather has filled Green Spring Gardens with beautiful flowers.

Annandale Viewfinder: WWII Speaker, Winterfest and Leaps and Bounds Learning

The guest speaker for the Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Lunch N' Life was Grant Ichikawa from the Japanese American Veterans Association. The Northern Virginia Community College gym was filled with visitors to the Vienna Wireless Society Winterfest, a gathering of amateur radio operators. The 'Leaps and Bounds' program at Hidden Oaks Nature Center taught the participants some amazing animal facts.

Annandale Viewfinder: Heritage Night and Children's Programs

Braddock Elementary School held its annual Heritage Night, which introduces students to the food, crafts, clothing and culture of countries all around the world. The Hidden Oaks Nature Center Little Acorns program talked about snow when we actually had a bit of snow on the ground, and storytime at George Mason Regional Library had a zoo animal theme.

Annandale Viewfinder: A Tea Party and a Health Expo

Hidden Oaks Nature Center held another of its popular tea parties with tasty treats, crafts, a story, a walk and education about a variety of animals. The ACCA Child Development Center, United Way of the National Capital Area and Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States joined forces to hold a free Health and Fitness Expo.

For children too young to attend elementary school, Annandale offers a number of activities. George Mason Regional Library has story time for different age groups, and Hidden Oaks Nature Center has started the Forest Fledglings program for 2012.

Much of this past week felt more like spring than late November, and many area residents took advantage of the great parks in Annandale.  Hidden Oaks Nature Center offered programs for young people and Mason District Park's soccer field and dog park were put to good use .

Area children enjoyed educational programs offered at George Mason Regional Library and at Hidden Oaks Nature Center. Volunteers worked hard to keep both locations looking great and would be happy to have others join them in their work at the library and the nature center.

Veterans were recognized and remembered in Annandale during the American Legion Post 1976 Veterans Day ceremony last Friday. Young children from the area enjoyed stories at George Mason Regional Library and learned about leaves and turtles at Hidden Oaks Nature Center.
