It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could help …

A gallery of photos taken around Annandale this week.
What a busy week it was in Annandale. A variety of old cars were on display at Cruise Night in the JukeBox Diner parking lot, and Buenos Grill finally opened. The Annandale Fall Festival and Parade brought lots of people to town. Parade participants assembled in the Annandale United Methodist Church parking lot and marched down Columbia Pike. Rides, stages and vendor booths set up in the Safeway parking lot provided entertainment for the entire day. The American Legion held a large yard sale with all kinds of treasures as well as food and drinks. The strong winds and heavy rain of Hurricane Sandy left behind some damage, but the storm didn't cancel Halloween. The holiday spirit was alive and well on Murray Lane and Moss Drive.

Fewer than 2,000 Dominion customers in Northern Virginia remained without power Thursday morning.
Dominion Virginia Power this morning released a list of where crews will be working to restore power Thursday. The list is attached to this article as a pdf (available in the media box to the right). "Lists are based on early morning work plans for crews. However, needs often change during a major restoration and crews stay on the move. They may visit, leave and return to some locations, and may perform work at locations not shown on today's list," according to Dominion. The highest concentration of current outages are inside the Beltway, however many smaller outages exist across Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties and elsewhere. Dominion reported only about 1,700 customers without power in Northern Virginia as of Wednesday night…

Northern Virginia was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers, for when the hotline isn’t staffed, include 609-775-5236 and 908-303-0471 or emails can be sent to Rowena.Madden@sos.state.nj.us. The New York City agency NYC Service is coordinating volunteers for various relief projects in New York City. Go to its Facebook page or email nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with your name and email address. The American Red …

While we prepared, rode through and assessed the damage, technology informed us, entertained us and connected us to friends and family.
The oft-repeated advice in news reports, conversations with family and on-line in the lead up to the storm was to charge your cell phones. The new twist this year was the addition of instructions on how to use Twitter via text messaging (SMS). The Wall Street Journal included it in a list of storm-related apps and advice. Twitter shared its own list of who to follow for emergency updates (as did Patch in Northern Virginia). For complete Hurricane Sandy coverage from Patch, click on the news tab above and then click on the Hurricane Sandy section. The American Red Cross encourages us to post that we are Safe and Well in areas that may be cut off from reliable information in situations when disasters lead to mass displacements of people. …

School is in and Halloween is on in Fairfax County.
All Fairfax County public schools and offices will open on time on Wednesday, Oct. 31, the schools system announced Tuesday. Individual schools that may have power outages will be reassessed in the morning, so check your inbox for Keep in Touch messages from your individual schools or check the FCPS website. FCPS is asking parents to be patient as buses may need to work around road closures in some parts of the county and bus routes may be delayed. Meanwhile, Halloween trick or treating is generally on in most neighborhoods in Fairfax County. Since trick or treat is not organized by any one jurisdiction, like a town government it is hard to make a universal decision, said Fairfax County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald. President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Senate candidates Tim Kaine, George Allen canceled Virginia campaign events during Hurricane Sandy. Hours extended for absentee voting.
Hurricane Sandy upended the campaign schedules for the presidential race, Virginia's U.S. Senate race and congressional races, and put a temporary halt to some early voting and election officer training in the runup to Election Day next Tuesday. "I don't want anything to interrupt full participation in democracy as we head into this presidential election," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, in a news conference with reporters Tuesday. Eight registrars across the state Tuesday were closed — including Arlington County, Falls Church City, Loudoun County and Manassas Park City — due to the storm and could not offer absentee voting. Fairfax County offered absentee voting at Government Center from 4 - 8 p.m. In Alexandria, at least one voting …
The governor said power should be restored to all Dominion customers by Thursday.
Gov. Bob McDonnell said in his final press briefing for Hurricane Sandy that Virginia was "spared a significant event." “First responders and private partners, they have really done an amazing job preparing for the storm and applying lessons learned from previous storms and putting in an incredible amount of hours,” McDonnell said. McDonnell cited concerns about rivers cresting as flood waters go into the major arteries, and he expected an update on that later Tuesday. Virginia was awarded a federal disaster declaration yesterday, said McDonnell, noting he was “delighted” that President Barack Obama and FEMA were on it immediately. "That is only for federal direct assistance to allow them to provide resources directly and as we do our …
