With third straight year of zero funding for program, cyclists say some transportation improvements are threatened; county to look toward Arlington for model
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors formally adopted a $6.7 billion budget Tuesday morning, a spending plan which put aside more money for human services, schools and employee pay but, for the third consecutive year, not bicycle programs. Although the county funds a full-time bicycle coordinator in its transportation department, the bicycle program has gone without funding since fiscal year 2011, according to Fairfax County staff reports provided to supervisors this year. The county's formal bike program was launched in 2006 as the Comprehensive Bicycle Initiative. Early projects included developing the county's first bike route map, retrofitting connector buses, and adding bike racks to county park and ride lots. The program received…

Local educators say more cooperation and collaboration needed in Virginia to prepare for changing job market.
This is the second of a two part series about the Feb. 25, 2012, joint retreat of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County School Board. Part I, Board of Supervisors, School Board Team Up, was published Monday. __________ Providing a skilled work force for the next decade is going to require collaboration between public school systems, community colleges and four-year universities, according to local educators. Dana Kauffman, director of College Government Affairs at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), said local communities need to grow their own front-line work force. He addressed the joint retreat of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board Saturday. A 2011 study conducted by Dr. Stephen …

The vacancies will allow stores to move around and remain operational while large sections of the building are renovated. Other vacancies are deliberate for a different reason: “[The owners have] not been renewing leases for stores that they don’t think fit in with the long-term redevelopment plans for the mall.” --------- What…

Announced her plans to supporters at the Mason Inn and Conference Center on Sunday
With steady hands and fixed eyes, Sharon Bulova did it again. On Sunday, the Democrat announced that she would seek reelection as the chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, looking to continue nearly a quarter-century career as a local elected official. “It is no accident that Fairfax County is acknowledged as the best-managed county of its size in the United States,” Bulova told supporters from a podium at the Mason Inn and Conference Center at George Mason University. “Continuity matters, as does strong, consistent leadership.” Bulova, who faces Republican businessman Spike Williams in November, was narrowly elected chairman on Feb. 3, 2009, in a special election to fill the seat vacated by U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th). …
