Landmark Mall Redevelopment Meeting Set for May

The Howard Hughes Corp. plans to redevelop the central portion of the mall into an open-air town center with retail and apartments.

If you missed the April 8 meeting on the future of Landmark Mall redevelopment—or left after not being able to find a seat—no worries. City staff and the Howard Hughes Corp., which owns the central portion of the mall to be redeveloped, will host a second information meeting at May 1. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the mall, on the second floor of the former Lord and Taylor space. Howard Hughes has submitted an application to the city for redevelopment of the portion of Landmark Mall between Sears and Macy's. Landmark Mall Redevelopment: Residents Hopeful

Howard Hughes Corp. shared plans Monday to redevelop central portion of mall into town center.

More than 200 people crowded into the community room at Landmark Mall Monday night to hear how the Howard Hughes Corp. plans to redevelop the central portion of the mall into seven blocks in an urban town center with retail, restaurants and residential space. Howard Hughes, Sears and Macy’s each own about a third of the mall and parking lots. The redevelopment plans would affect only what Howard Hughes owns, and Sears and Macy’s would become stand-alone stores connected by a pedestrian walkway through the street blocks. John Simon, Howard Hughes executive vice president of strategic planning, said Monday the company’s plans call for the central portion of the mall to be demolished and replaced by seven small blocks of mixed-use …

Glad to see some movement in that area and I hope that traffic flow and projection of the gradual and inevitable increase of traffic is taken into consideration before and after this is developed.   more ›

Its funny I was just in Landmark Mall this week and thinking about this very subject. Several of the smaller malls in Fairfax have run their course and its time to put them to pasture. Springfield mall and landmark mall are two example of malls where there is no future. Unlike Mosaic, the Landmark area does not have a metro station close by and it is a magnet for low income residents. Without a …   more ›

City Receives Landmark Mall Redevelopment Plans

Howard Hughes Corp. submits plans, but mall owner and City of Alexandria officials are quiet on details.

Landmark Mall owner Howard Hughes Corp. has submitted plans to redevelop part of Landmark Mall, but officials with the city of Alexandria and the Howard Hughes Corp. are keeping mum on specifics. “The Howard Hughes Corp. has made a redevelopment submission, and the City is reviewing the submission for completeness,” said city spokesman Tony Castrilli in a statement. “We are seeking to schedule a community meeting for early April, so the Howard Hughes Corp. can present their plan.” Landmark Mall is one of many shopping options near the Annandale and North Springfield areas. Howard Hughes spokeswoman Caryn Statman Kboudi released the following statement: “In conjunction with Sears and Macy’s, we continue to explore the feasibility of a …

Landmark Mall Redevelopment Plans Could Come in Spring

New town center will likely be built in multiple phases; Alexandria City mayor says Sears has been holdup.

Plans for the redevelopment of part of Landmark Mall, which is located not far from Annandale, could go before the Alexandria Planning Commission by the end of this spring, West End residents learned Monday night. Alexandria City approval could take a while longer.  Speaking before a meeting of the Watergate of Landmark Homeowners Association, Karl Moritz, the city’s deputy director of planning and zoning, said the city has been working with mall owners Howard Hughes Corp., Macy’s and Sears to redevelop the shopping center that has become an eyesore for the West End. The three companies, or the city, will hold community meetings once plans become public, Moritz said. Each company owns about a third of the site, and each must agree on any …

It amazes me that any mall or property management company could screw up a perfect location like Land Mark Mall for so long. This property is located on the 395, the main drag into Washington DC and close to the beltway, surrounded by a growing upscale population, during the best economic era in this areas history, but for some reason the stakeholders could not make this location work. Somehow, …   more ›

Landmark Mall Redevelopment Still Under Consideration

Officials from the City of Alexandria and Howard Hughes Corp., which owns much of Landmark Mall, are considering a variety of options.

Wondering if renovation plans are still in the works for Landmark Mall? Discussions about redeveloping the mall and the surrounding area are progressing, officials with the City of Alexandria and Howard Hughes Corp. both said this week. However, neither side is releasing any details or a timeline. "The city and the owners of the in-line stores at Landmark Mall have held ongoing, regular discussions for the last six months about redevelopment of Landmark Mall, in particular focused on what the Phase I development plans might be,” said Mark Jinks, deputy city manager. “The city is encouraged and hope that those discussions come to fruition in the coming months ahead." Caryn Kboudi, vice president of marketing for Howard Hughes Corp., told …

Landmark Mall Redevelopment Still a Long Way Off

About one-third of the mall's storefronts are currently vacant.

Alexandria's Landmark Mall has a vacancy rate more than three times the national average. According to Reuters, at large U.S. malls, the national vacancy rate is about 9 percent, the highest since the first quarter 2000, when Reis, a a commercial real estate research and analysis company based in New York, began tracking regional malls.  But more than one-third of the Landmark Mall’s retail space—more than 50 individual storefronts—sit unused. In addition, two large sections of the mall adjacent to Sears and a storefront on level 2 large enough to be a small department store are empty.  Unlike Springfield Mall, just a few miles southwest of Landmark, renovations of Landmark Mall still seem to be a long way off. Local management at Landmark…

I own a condo in the immediate area of Landmark Mall. I go to Macy's once or twice a year and never venture in to the Mall at all. It is a waste of space and should be closed down as it basically is now. Malls are a thing of the past and any effort to revitalize it as a mall is a wasted effort. With Pentagon City and Tysons I and II within miles why anyone would go here is beyond me. I understand…   more ›
