As we approach the middle of the year, Patch checked in with Gross to discuss issues in Mason District and her agenda.

With summer fast approaching, Patch checked in with Mason District Supervisor Penelope Gross to briefly discuss the major issues currently happening within the district and the initiatives her office is currently pursuing. Gross is now in her fifth term as Mason District Supervisor. From your perspective, what local issues are currently most affecting Mason District residents? Land use, litter, and redevelopment are usually big topics of interest. What, if anything, are you doing to address those issues? Local issues in Mason District always include land use, redevelopment, and transportation. Four Men Charged with Armed Robbery in Annandale

A police officer on patrol interrupted the robbery in progress in the Little River Run Shopping Center on Monday.

Four men from Prince George's County and Charles County in Maryland were charged with armed robbery after a police officer interrupted a transaction in progress Monday in the Little River Run Shopping Center in Annandale. Marion Kenneth Allen, Jr., 22, Cye Adam Penn, 22, Bryant Robinson, 19, and Xavier Hall, 22 were charged with robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and abduction, according to a news release from the Fairfax County Police Department. A 15-year-old boy placed an ad online advertising Nike tennis shoes for sale and agreed to meet a buyer at the shopping center around 10:50 p.m. on Monday, according to the news release. School Board Approves Contract for $90 Million TJ Renovations

The renovations will help alleviate overcrowding and pay for additional technology resources for students.

Renovations at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will move forward this year as planned. The Fairfax County School Board awarded a contract to Henley Construction Company, Inc. Thursday night in the amount of $67,440,000 for the school renovation project. According to an agenda item from Thursday's meeting, the motion to award the contract was put forth by Sandy Evans, who represents Mason District on the board, and was carried unanimously. The total cost of the project is estimated at $90 million and funding for the project will come from the 2011 School Bond Referendum. No argument that TJ needs to renovated. I had a child attend TJ. As Mr. Sneed says, "The science labs are the most expensive spaces to be renovated, you can't put them in trailers". However why do fcps facilites renovate every high school as the Taj Mahal, 100 million? Annandale Spring Clean-Up on Saturday Needs Volunteers

The Annandale Women's Club is sponsoring a clean-up this weekend to remove trash from the community.

Annandale residents and community members are invited to help pick up trash and litter around Annandale this weekend as part of a community clean-up event. Sponsored by the Annandale Women's Club, the clean-up event is in need of volunteers to help pick up trash on Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Annandale and Mason District residents have been vocal in the past year about the amount of trash and litter visible in the community. Last year during an environmental forum hosted by the Mason District Council, residents tried to brainstorm ways to beautify their neighborhoods while complaining about the growing issue of litter in parks, on medians, and elsewhere through the community. Fundraiser Planned for Injured Mason District Officer Dinh

Mason District Station Officer Long "Junior" V. Dinh suffered severe injuries in a head-on car crash in February.

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 77, along with officers from the Mason District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department, will host a fundraising event this month to collect money for officer Long V. Dinh Jr.'s rehabilitation fund. Dinh was injured in a head-on collision crash in February and was hospitalized for much of March. According to a website set up for family and friends to follow Dinh's progress, Dinh is now recovering in a rehab facility. The fundraiser will be on Sunday, April 28 at Hard Times Cafe located at 4069 Chain Bridge Rd., in Fairfax from noon to 7 p.m. Hard Times will donate a portion of the night's sales to Dinh and his family. Capt. Carol Wilhite replaced Capt. Gun Lee as commander of the Mason District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department in March.

Capt. Carol Wilhite, the new commander of the Mason District Station, discussed upcoming initiatives for the station with Mason District residents during her first introductory Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting Tuesday night at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale. Wilhite, the former assistant commander of the Fair Oaks District Station, replaced Capt. Gun Lee as commander last month after he announced plans to move to the Major Crimes division of the Fairfax County Investigation Bureau. Update: Power Restored to More Than 100 Customers in Lincolnia Following Outage

Power was out for part of the morning and early afternoon due to the storm.

Update 1:34 p.m.: According to Dominion Power, a total of 4,000 customers in Alexandria lost power due to the storm, including more than 100 in the Lincolnia area near Annandale. Dominion has since restored power to the area as of 1:30 p.m. -- More than 100 customers in the Lincolnia area of Mason District just outside of Annandale are currently without power, according to the Dominion Power Interactive Outage Map. The map viewer estimates approximately 143 customers are without power as of 11 a.m. Monday. The cause of the outage is still under investigation, according to the map. An estimated restoration time is also unknown. Snowfall in Fairfax County Monday morning caused closures and cancellations in Fairfax County and delayed spreak …

Mason District Residents Talk Budget, Transportation, Libraries at Spring Town Hall

The meeting was hosted by Mason District Supervisor Penelope Gross in Annandale Wednesday night.

Around 30 residents joined Mason District Supervisor Penelope Gross and Fairfax County Executive Edward L. Long Wednesday night at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale to discuss the FY 2014 Advertised Budget Plan. Long, whose presentation included information previously reported about the budget, stressed the importance of approaching the budget from a long-term planning perspective to the audience when discussing Fairfax County’s future. “We can’t afford what we’ve been doing in the past, at least not for the next five years,” said Long of the suggested 2-cent increase in the real estate tax rate from $1.075 per $100 of assessed value to $1.095. Capt. Lee: Injured Mason District Officer 'Has Long Recovery Road Ahead'

Lee updated residents on the officer's condition at Tuesday night’s Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale.

The 28-year-old police officer from the Mason District station of the Fairfax County Police Department who was injured in last Thursday's fatal head-on crash has a long road of recovery ahead, according to Capt. Gun Lee, commander of the Mason District Station. Lee spoke about the officer at Tuesday night’s Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale.
