Spotlight by Starlight Summer Concert Series Starts June 2

Bands will perform at Mason District and Ossian Hall Parks this summer in Annandale.

The Spotlight by Starlight summer concert series, sponsored by Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross and the Friends of the Mason District Park, returns to Annandale in June. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in June, July and August, a variety of bands and artists will take the stage at Mason District Park at 7:30 p.m. If there’s a threat of inclement weather, call 703-324-SHOW(7469) one hour before the start of the show for updates.

Annandale residents woke up to one inch of snow Thursday morning, which delayed Fairfax County Public Schools opening for two hours. Residents reported icy conditions causing problems for cars going up and down hilly roads in Annandale, such as near the Sleepy Hollow Woods neighborhood. Plows mixed in with cars down major roads such as Little River Turnpike and Braddock Road, looking to clear streets and parking lots. Share your snow photos on Annandale Patch. Mason's Hill Civil War Marker Dedication Set for Saturday

The marker, which was installed in Mason District Park in June, will be officially unveiled to the public.

The official dedication ceremony for the Mason's Hill Civil War Trail Marker is set to take place this weekend in Mason District Park. Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross, representatives from the Fairfax County History Commission, the Fairfax County Park Authority Board are scheduled to attend the ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. The marker was installed in the park earlier this year in June as part of Fairfax County’s Civil War 150th Legacy Project. As August's blue moon rose over the Mason District Park amphitheater, area residents enjoyed the final concert of the 2012 Spotlight by Starlight series. OCEAN Orchestra delighted everyone with great Celtic music and great costumes. Hidden Oaks Nature Center held its Dino Extravaganza with multiple puppet shows, a walk along the trail and a visit to Nature Playce. Skateboarders enjoyed the newly opened addition to the Wakefield Park Skatepark, and construction continued on the Beltway HOT Lanes.

The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Lunch N' Life attendees gathered at United Baptist Church to hear a talk from Ruth Benker, a volunteer from Fairfax Pets on Wheels. Benker's dog, Teddy, delighted everyone as he circled the room to give 'high fives'. Members of the Fairfax Harley Owners Group spoke to a group of children at George Mason Regional Library about motorcycle safety. After the talk everyone went into the parking lot to get a close look at the motorcycles. Many kids and even a few adults climbed on the motorcycles, tried on helmets and tried out the horns. Spotlight by Starlight continues to provide a variety of entertainment for area residents. On Friday evening, the Mason District Park amphitheater was filled with bluegrass music by Wayne Taylor and Appaloosa, and Elikeh performed Aftopop music at Ossian Hall Park on Saturday evening. Light rain on Sunday evening caused The Army Blues Jazz Ensemble to cut their performance at Mason District Park a bit short, but the audience enjoyed the music as long as possible. Students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology led a program at George Mason Regional Library, which was co-sponsored by Project BEST (Building Excitement for Science and Technology). The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra's OTO Brass Quintet explained how brass instruments work and played music from around the world during their performance at the Mason District Park amphitheater. The Blue James Band filled the amphitheater with lively music on Sunday evening, and the blues were all around when Bruce Ewan performed with Steve 'Baby Jakes' Jacobs, Steve Shaw and Bob Berberich on Wednesday. The Annandale Healthcare Consortium, a subcommittee of the Annandale Chamber of Commerce, gave a presentation at George Mason Regional Library about the services available for Fairfax County seniors. Annandale offers many different activities for both young and old, and this past week was no exception. The Friends of George Mason Regional Library sponsored a program by Reptiles Alive that included both large and small animals. The lively music of Rocknoceros at George Mason Regional Library had the kids clapping and dancing. Tom Paxton, accompanied by Greg Trafidlo, drew a large crowd at the Mason District Park amphitheater. Paxton invited his grandson, Sean Silvia, to join them on stage for a few songs. Mason District Park was the place to be on Saturday morning to learn about dinosaurs during the 'Dinosaur Babies' presentation by DinoRock, and the Hall Brothers had the amphitheater hopping on Wednesday evening with rock-n-roll and …

With only partly cloudy skies forecast over Annandale, we should be able to get a good view of the Perseids meteor shower, which is set to peak this weekend. The forecast for Saturday and Sunday nights is for partly cloudy skies with overnight low temperatures around 70 degrees. The Perseids are a meteor shower visible when the Earth passes through the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet. The meteor shower has been visible for about 2,000 years. Yeah, I recall seeing folks at Ossian Hall in the parking lot around then, but no one was actually in the park area in an attempt to obey park rules. Which is not to say that they weren't breaking them by being in the parking lot. The Friends of George Mason Regional Library continue to sponsor enjoyable performances at George Mason Regional Library. Kofi Dennis had the young audience moving to rhythm and rhymes and, Jonathan Austin kept young and old entertained with humor, magic and juggling. The Spotlight by Starlight series brought Robin and Linda Williams and Their Fine Group to Mason District Park on Friday evening, Latin rock group Nayas on Sunday and King Soul on Wednesday. Saturday's Bolivian Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian Hall Park started a bit late because of a sudden shower that got performers and spectators wet, but didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm.
