Spotlight by Starlight continues to provide a variety of entertainment for area residents. On Friday evening, the Mason District Park amphitheater was filled with bluegrass music by Wayne Taylor and Appaloosa, and Elikeh performed Aftopop music at Ossian Hall Park on Saturday evening. Light rain on Sunday evening caused The Army Blues Jazz Ensemble to cut their performance at Mason District Park a bit short, but the audience enjoyed the music as long as possible. The meteor shower is set to peak this weekend.
With only partly cloudy skies forecast over Annandale, we should be able to get a good view of the Perseids meteor shower, which is set to peak this weekend. The forecast for Saturday and Sunday nights is for partly cloudy skies with overnight low temperatures around 70 degrees. The best place to see the Perseids meteor shower in Annandale might be: (Do you know of a great location? Share it in the comments section below!) The Perseids are a meteor shower visible when the Earth passes through the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet. The meteor shower has been visible for about 2,000 years. The Friends of George Mason Regional Library continue to sponsor enjoyable performances at George Mason Regional Library. Kofi Dennis had the young audience moving to rhythm and rhymes and, Jonathan Austin kept young and old entertained with humor, magic and juggling. The Spotlight by Starlight series brought Robin and Linda Williams and Their Fine Group to Mason District Park on Friday evening, Latin rock group Nayas on Sunday and King Soul on Wednesday. Saturday's Bolivian Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian Hall Park started a bit late because of a sudden shower that got performers and spectators wet, but didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm. The Spotlight by Starlight program continued to provide great entertainment at Mason District Park with the John Jorgenson Quintet, the NVCC-Annandale Symphony Orchestra and The Thrillbillys. The Irish Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian Hall Park almost got rained out, but the show went on to the delight of the attendees. George Mason Regional Library had programs for young and old. Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres taught a bit of Spanish and got the kids moving and singing. Don Hakenson, a local author, gave a presentation about local Civil War events.

The Great Zucchini brought his magic to Mason District Park and The Continentals played waltzes and polkas at Ossian Hall Park. The Bar C Ranch Creature Teacher show at George Mason Regional Library introduced children to a number of fuzzy and scaly animals.

The 'Spotlight by Starlight' summer concert series brought Blue Sky 5 to Mason District Park and the Aloha Boys to Ossian Hall Park. Area children enjoyed a Fairy Tale Tea Party at Hidden Oaks Nature Center and bedtime stories at George Mason Regional Library.

The semi-annual book sale sponsored by The Friends of the George Mason Regional Library started at 5 p.m. Thursday and attracted a crowd. The library offered another early reading program for young children, and the Annandale Boys & Girls Club held a soccer clinic at Ossian Hall Park.

The activities offered at Annandale's parks entertained many area residents this past week. There was Irish music and dance at Ossian Hall Park. A Hidden Oaks Nature Center program taught young people about dinosaurs, and a number of children tried on animal costumes in the nature center.

This past week's music and dance performances at Annandale's parks entertained both young and old. Volunteers packaged food for the needy and a local politician welcomed constituents to her new campaign headquarters. Mother Nature caused some problems when a tree fell in Columbia Pines during Wednesday's storm.

With summer officially here, area residents enjoyed being outside and took advantage of the local parks and entertainment. Though the Bolivian Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian Hall Park started with a few sprinkles, the skies cleared and the stage was filled with performers in rainbow colored costumes. The ongoing work for the Beltway Hot Lanes has resulted in changes for pedestrians and drivers in our area.

Yeah, I recall seeing folks at Ossian Hall in the parking lot around then, but no one was actually in the park area in an attempt to obey park rules. Which is not to say that they weren't breaking them by being in the parking lot.
