Ryan McElveen's Goals for Fairfax Schools in 2013

Fairfax County School Board member shares list of "ins" and "outs" for the new year.

As 2013 approaches, Patch has asked Fairfax County School Board members to share their goals and priorities for 2013. Member Ryan McElveen (At-large) chose to write an "Unofficial FCPS 2013 In-and-Out List." It runs unedited below. It’s that time of year when we reflect on all we’ve done over the past year and look ahead to what the New Year will bring. In a county as big as Fairfax, the to-do list is endless, but here are some of the things on which the School Board is setting its sights for 2013. I wish you a wonderful holiday break! I am so thrilled to vote for Ryan McElveen because he's a got the charisma, energy, and first-hand experience in what is actually happening in Fairfax County education. He's been the underdog through out the campaign season and I think he's really going to surprise everyone.   more ›

At Large Candidates Promise Change

Five of the seven at large school board candidates answered questions about honors classes, teacher pay, and the FCPS budget.

Change, community input and fiscal transparency were common themes of all five of the at large school board candidates speaking at Hollin Meadows Science and Match Focus School.  The differences came in the specifics. Voters will choose three at large school board members on Election Day, Nov. 8, from the seven names on the ballot.  The participants at Hollin Meadows were:     Sheree Brown-Kaplan     Lin-Dai Kendall     Lolita Mancheno-Smoak     Ryan McElveen     Ted Velkoff At large candidates Ilryong Moon and Steve Stuban were not present. The following are excerpts from the Q&A, with points made by the five participating at large candidates. The first question dealt with the process of choosing a new superintendent for Fairfax County …

"Ms. Mancheno-Smoak is one of the so-called reform candidates, but, unlike some of her counterparts who seem intent on refighting past controversies, she refreshingly is focused on the challenges confronting students. Foremost is her interest in the needs of at-risk students and shrinking the achievement gap, issues that are informed by her work as an educator and her immigrant background."  This…   more ›

On Discipline: At-Large School Board Candidate Ryan McElveen

Discipline reform has become a key issue in this school board race. See how the candidates stack up.

Patch has asked the candidates running for an at-large seat on the Fairfax County School Board a series of questions on discipline policy reform - a topic fast becoming a key issue in this race. 1. Do you think the recent reforms passed by the school board changing the discipline policy were appropriate? The recent reforms passed by the School Board were a good start in what I hope proves to be an on-going dialogue with students, parents, teachers and administrators. These policies have been on the books for years, since I was a student. As the only candidate who’s been through FCPS within the past decade, I’ve seen first-hand the deleterious effects these policies have had on my peers. Mistakes that students make in their K-12 years …

Skyping kids who were suspended is just another policy from the school boards of America to offer better service to those kids who don't follow the rules. What if an 'A' student asked to stay home and receive their lecture via skype? One friend of mine said "if you want a 1 to 5 teacher to kid ratio for your kid... tell them to beat someone up." The logic in our schools is becoming absurd. Ryan …   more ›

In Second Shot, McElveen Wins Fairfax County Democrat Endorsement By Just Two Votes

Fairfax County Democratic Committee votes to change endorsement process for at-large school board candidates

The last time Ryan McElveen appeared before the Fairfax County Democratic Committee, a turbulent endorsement process left him just seven votes shy of an endorsement for an at-large seat on the Fairfax County School Board. On Tuesday, McElveen landed on the other side of that scenario, pulling ahead of candidate Jeannie Armstrong by just two votes to earn the committee's third endorsement for the at-large seats. Of the 197 members of the FCDC who voted Tuesday at the special meeting at Fairfax High School, 99 voted for McElveen and 97 for Armstrong, with one vote for no endorsement. More than 500 members voted at the first endorsement meeting. Armstrong said she would not run for an at-large school board seat without the FCDC endorsement. …
