The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Lunch N' Life attendees gathered at United Baptist Church to hear a talk from Ruth Benker, a volunteer from Fairfax Pets on Wheels. Benker's dog, Teddy, delighted everyone as he circled the room to give 'high fives'. Members of the Fairfax Harley Owners Group spoke to a group of children at George Mason Regional Library about motorcycle safety. After the talk everyone went into the parking lot to get a close look at the motorcycles. Many kids and even a few adults climbed on the motorcycles, tried on helmets and tried out the horns. George Mason Regional Library held its last 'Small Wonders' program for the season. Young and old learned about "Rhythm Around the World" from Virginia Virtuosi at Green Spring Gardens. Kent Knowles from the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia brought five non-native birds to the Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Adventures in Learning program. Attendees also learned about Mrs. Jefferson Davis and Mrs. Ulysses Grant from author Mary Lipsey.

Students at Poe Middle School received a standing ovation for their entertaining performance of "Aladdin Jr." There was great weather for the 8th Annual Annandale Hospital Bed Race, and Frank Cepollina from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Satellite Servicing Capabilities Office spoke to the Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Adventures in Learning participants.

The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Lunch N' Life attendees met at Annandale United Methodist Church and learned about container gardening from master gardener Martha Sewell from Green Spring Gardens. The Canterbury Woods Elementary School CETA (Changing Education Through the Arts) Showcase gave parents a chance to experience the program firsthand and to hear about its successes from teachers, students and a representative from the Kennedy Center CETA Program. The school's Author Showcase brought author Lawrence Pringle to talk to students about writing books.

The Friends of the George Mason Regional Library had another book sale, which drew quite a crowd. Canterbury Woods Elementary School held an author's showcase week. The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Adventures in Learning participants met at John Calvin Presbyterian Church and learned about area bird counts from the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia and local Civil War history from author and historian, Jim Lewis.

Hidden Oaks Nature Center presented three puppet shows for a large group of children, and Wildlife Ambassadors brought some live jungle animals to George Mason Regional Library. The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Adventures in Learning participants met at John Calvin Presbyterian Church and learned about global warming and Civil War weapons.

George Mason Regional Library and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department taught fire safety to area children. Author and researcher, Warren Perry, presented a lecture about Elvis Presley at Northern Virginia Community College. Steve Bruckner, conservation chair for the Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club, gave the Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Adventures in Learning participants a lot to think about during his climate change presentation at John Calvin Presbyterian Church.

The guest speaker for the Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Lunch N' Life was Grant Ichikawa from the Japanese American Veterans Association. The Northern Virginia Community College gym was filled with visitors to the Vienna Wireless Society Winterfest, a gathering of amateur radio operators. The 'Leaps and Bounds' program at Hidden Oaks Nature Center taught the participants some amazing animal facts.

This past week there were a number of holiday events to help put area residents in a festive mood. The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield had its holiday lunch, Supervisor Gross' office held a Holiday Town Gathering and the Annandale Christmas Tree Lighting was held in Tollhouse Plaza. The George Mason Regional Library held another storytime for very young children.
