Spotlight by Starlight Summer Concert Series Starts June 2

Bands will perform at Mason District and Ossian Hall Parks this summer in Annandale.

The Spotlight by Starlight summer concert series, sponsored by Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross and the Friends of the Mason District Park, returns to Annandale in June. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in June, July and August, a variety of bands and artists will take the stage at Mason District Park at 7:30 p.m. If there’s a threat of inclement weather, call 703-324-SHOW(7469) one hour before the start of the show for updates.

As August's blue moon rose over the Mason District Park amphitheater, area residents enjoyed the final concert of the 2012 Spotlight by Starlight series. OCEAN Orchestra delighted everyone with great Celtic music and great costumes. Hidden Oaks Nature Center held its Dino Extravaganza with multiple puppet shows, a walk along the trail and a visit to Nature Playce. Skateboarders enjoyed the newly opened addition to the Wakefield Park Skatepark, and construction continued on the Beltway HOT Lanes.

Annandale Viewfinder: Pets on Wheels, Motorcycles and Music

The Shepherd's Center of Annandale-Springfield Lunch N' Life attendees gathered at United Baptist Church to hear a talk from Ruth Benker, a volunteer from Fairfax Pets on Wheels. Benker's dog, Teddy, delighted everyone as he circled the room to give 'high fives'. Members of the Fairfax Harley Owners Group spoke to a group of children at George Mason Regional Library about motorcycle safety. After the talk everyone went into the parking lot to get a close look at the motorcycles. Many kids and even a few adults climbed on the motorcycles, tried on helmets and tried out the horns. Spotlight by Starlight continues to provide a variety of entertainment for area residents. On Friday evening, the Mason District Park amphitheater was filled with bluegrass music by Wayne Taylor and Appaloosa, and Elikeh performed Aftopop music at Ossian Hall Park on Saturday evening. Light rain on Sunday evening caused The Army Blues Jazz Ensemble to cut their performance at Mason District Park a bit short, but the audience enjoyed the music as long as possible. Students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology led a program at George Mason Regional Library, which was co-sponsored by Project BEST (Building Excitement for Science and Technology). The Friends of George Mason Regional Library continue to sponsor enjoyable performances at George Mason Regional Library. Kofi Dennis had the young audience moving to rhythm and rhymes and, Jonathan Austin kept young and old entertained with humor, magic and juggling. The Spotlight by Starlight series brought Robin and Linda Williams and Their Fine Group to Mason District Park on Friday evening, Latin rock group Nayas on Sunday and King Soul on Wednesday. Saturday's Bolivian Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian Hall Park started a bit late because of a sudden shower that got performers and spectators wet, but didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm. Viewfinder: Capitol Steps Humor, Library Programs, Country and Jazz Music

The Fairfax County Library System, which includes George Mason Regional Library, is participating in the "Geek the Library" program. Funded with a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the program promotes the many services offered by local libraries. The Friends of George Mason Regional Library sponsors many popular kids programs at the library over the summer, including a puppet show by Blue Sky Puppet Theatre and a performance by Tracey Eldridge. The Spotlight by Starlight series brought the Wil Gravatt Band to Mason District Park on Friday, and though the show was cut short because of lightning, the audience enjoyed some great country music for 45 minutes. Viewfinder: Irish Cultural Heritage Night, NVCC-Symphony Orchestra and More

The Spotlight by Starlight program continued to provide great entertainment at Mason District Park with the John Jorgenson Quintet, the NVCC-Annandale Symphony Orchestra and The Thrillbillys. The Irish Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian Hall Park almost got rained out, but the show went on to the delight of the attendees. George Mason Regional Library had programs for young and old. Uno, Dos, Tres con Andres taught a bit of Spanish and got the kids moving and singing. Don Hakenson, a local author, gave a presentation about local Civil War events.

Residents take advantage of the local products available at the Mason District Park Farmers Market. The 'Spotlight by Starlight' summer concert series brought The Justin Trawick Group to Mason District Park. The new Mason Crest Elementary School held a number of open houses. Green Spring Gardens offered an evening lecture about Civil War espionage.

Annandale Viewfinder: Music Fills the Air

Though the rain on June 1 canceled the first 'Spotlight by Starlight' concert at Mason District Park, Sunday evening was perfect for the performance by the Main Street Community Band, an ensemble of the City of Fairfax Band Association. The Annandale High School Choirs' final concert of the season was held at Annandale United Methodist Church and included a surprise for director Jessica Lardin. Sounds of the Caribbean filled the air at Mason District Park during the CAISO Steel Drum Band performance. Also, check out our videos from the performances by clicking below the photos above.
