Between Jan. 1 and March 31, Vornado Realty Trust spent $8.8 million on the Springfield Mall renovation, which is more than the company has spent on any other projects in its pipeline, according to the Washington Business Journal. The transformation of the Springfield Mall into the Springfield Town Center is expected to cost Vornado $225 million by the middle of 2014. When completed, the new town center will be 1.3 million sq. ft., accessible to about 800,000 people with an estimated household income of more than $117,000 a year and growing, according to the Vornado website. New video gives insight into shopping mall scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2014.
Vornado Realty Trust has provided a preview video of the Springfield Town Center which is expected to be completed by summer 2014. The new video — provided on the Vornado and shopping center Web sites — elaborates on the Springfield area and new features shoppers can expect when the center opens next year. Some features, Springfield and surrounding area residents should expect, include a multi-screen cinema, a new main entrance with valet parking, a health club, 700-seat food court, multiple kids' areas throughout the property and more than 7,600 parking spaces. According to the video, more than 500,000 cars pass the property daily and about 10,000 D.C. metro riders stop at the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station which is a 10-minute walk …

Because of reconstruction, many of the mall's stores have relocated to Springfield or Alexandria.
With the redevelopment of the Springfield Mall underway, of course many of the previous stores are relocated until the Springfield Town Center reopens mid-2014. Your favorite stores are still in business and have relocated in and around Kingstowne. Site plan depicts new lay out of the mall redevelopment.
The redevelopment of the Springfield Mall is currently progressing on schedule according to Mara Ooguin, a spokesperson for what will soon be the Springfield Town Center. The demolition of the Springfield Mall began Nov. 26. All of the mall's stores closed back in July except for Macy's, JCPenney and Target. The mall's redevelopment and transformation into what will be an upscale town center is part of a three-year effort between the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Vornado Realty Trust, who owns the mall, and a handful of community organizations in the Springfield area. Major renovations scheduled to begin in July will leave only the anchor stores intact.
Springfield Mall will close all stores except the anchor department stores come July, according to tenants at the mall. Macy's, Target and JCPenney will remain open as New York-based Vornado Realty Trust begins a two-year renovation of the property.
