Volunteers from across the county were honored Thursday at an awards ceremony.

On Thursday, 154 individuals and groups were honored at the 21st Annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards. The ceremony was attended by hundreds at the Waterford in Springfield. Volunteers were nominated in three categories: a competitive volunteer service award, a community champion award and benchmark award for a volunteer who contributed a certain number of hours to a cause in Fairfax County. Free Tax Preparation for Residents in Annandale Saturday

Families and individuals with a total income of $51,000 or less in 2012 are eligible to participate.

Fairfax County residents who made a total income of $51,000 or less in 2012 are eligible to have their taxes prepared for free this Saturday in Annandale. The community tax day event, which is sponsored by the Fairfax County Department of Family Services, Volunteer Fairfax, and Deloitte LLP, will be at the Annandale Heritage Center located at 7611 Little River Tpke. in Suite 300 West from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the seventh year Fairfax County, Deloitte LLP, and Volunteer Fairfax have partnered to provide free tax preparation for low-to-middle income families and individuals, according to a news release from Volunteer Fairfax. Volunteer Fairfax Seeks Volunteers for Annual Event

Registration is still available for several local area projects, including one in Annandale.

Hundreds of residents are gearing up to volunteer next weekend at non-profits across Fairfax County for the 18th annual VolunteerFest®. VolunteerFest® is a regional day of community service sponsored by Volunteer Fairfax in conjunction with National Make a Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 27. For one full day, volunteers will help out at area elementary schools, food banks and beyond. According to a news release, almost 1,400 community and corporate volunteers participated in last year’s event. Volunteer projects in the past have included creating care packages for troops, painting homes in the area and more. Photos: Annandale Resident Wins Fairfax County Volunteer Service Award

The 20th Annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards recognized Fairfax County residents and organizations for their service to the community.

Annandale resident Scott Anderson was among 118 local volunteers recognized at the 20th Annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards ceremony held at the Waterford in Springfield on Friday. Anderson, who is a volunteer with FACETS, won the Adult Volunteer Under 250 Hours award. Stanley Garnett won the Community Champions award for Mason District and Greg Sykes won the Community Champions award for Braddock District.
