West Springfield High Students Arrested on Child Porn Charges

Three teenage boys from the school were arrested for producing child pornography that involved six female teens who attend West Springfield and other area high schools, according to news reports.

Three teenage boys, students at West Springfield High School, were arrested last month on charges of producing child pornography, according to a report Friday by Fox 5. The three students "are accused of getting teenage girls drunk and making sex tapes. The tapes were made sometimes after the girls had passed out," the Fox 5 report noted. The three students, two ages 16 and one age 15, were charged as juveniles with “possession, reproduction, distribution, solicitation and facilitation of child pornography,” Officer Shelley Broderick, a Fairfax County Police spokeswoman, told The Washington Post, which reported the story Saturday. The ongoing investigation began in late November after a student tipped off a security officer at the school. …

Current School Board to Decide on Interior Cameras

Decision on cameras within schools to be made before incoming school board's term begins

With three regular meetings left before the newly elected Fairfax County School Board takes over, the current board has decided to keep the decision on allowing the use of cameras inside high schools in their own hands. Since being introduced, the proposal has been amended to allow each high school to decide whether cameras will be installed inside the school walls. It will not be a requirement. Also, elementary and middle schools are not a part of this proposal. Though two board members — Sandy Evans (Mason) and Dan Storck (Mount Vernon) — suggested the board hold off the vote until after Jan. 1 when the new term begins, others said piling this issue on top of the other duties new members would have to deal with upon taking office would …

Too many parents & students assume the issue is a potential violation of a students rights, unnecessary video monitoring of students & use of funds for somthing that is not necessary. More than 150 area high school students will join the critically acclaimed Boston String Quartet on November 12, in a performance called The Ethno-Urban Orchestra.  The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Northern Virginia Community College’s Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall. The Boston String Quartet's Ethno-Urban Orchestra program develops, encourages and enhances students’ musical gifts through pre-concert workshops, then provides a concert experience to showcase their abilities. FCPS Requesting $252.75 Million in Bond Referendum

Passage would add to the $232.58 million approved by voters in 2009.

Fairfax County voters are faced with a $252.75 million dollar decision.  Included on the Nov. 8 general election ballot is a school bond referendum to fund Fairfax County Public School's 2012-16 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Each year Fairfax County Public Schools develops a five-year CIP to address future facility needs, including renovations of existing facilities and building of new facilities.  According to Denise James, director of Facilities Planning Services for FCPS, unfinished projects from previous CIP’s are carried over into the new one. “The CIP includes a cash flow of expenditures on projections over the next five years, and then anticipates expenditures in the 'out years' – i.e., over the subsequent 6-10 year period, for…
