Update Wednesday 4:00 p.m. According to an update from Del. Kaye Kory (D-38th), heavy, wet snow is falling in much of Dominion Power's service territory with particularly heavy snow falling in the far western suburbs of Richmond and Northern Virginia. The snow is accompanied by increasing winds.  Dominion Virginia Power said its crews and trucks were prepared for the storm and are responding to power outages as quickly as it is safe to do so. Driving conditions remain hazardous in much of Dominion's service territory. Light Snowfall Possible Monday, Tuesday Nights

Temperatures will warm up into 40s by Wednesday.

The big chill in Northern Virginia continues through Tuesday night with highs in the 30s on Monday and Tuesday. Expect cloudy skies during the days and a possiblity for snow flurries Monday and Tuesday nights, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will feel much colder Monday. Wind gusts up to 25 mph will continue through Monday afternoon. As a result of the wind, the National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory until 3 p.m. Monday that includes the Potomac River. This means that wind speeds of 18 to 33 knots are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions for small craft. NWS: Fairfax County Under Winter Weather Advisory Monday Morning

Sleet, freezing rain expected from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m.

UPDATE Monday: Fairfax County Public Schools is allowing employees to take unscheduled leave until 10 a.m. Monday. SACC centers will be open by 10 a.m. --- UPDATE Sunday 10:50 p.m.: The federal government is advising its employees to stay off roads Monday morning until 10 a.m. Federal offices will open to the public Monday at noon. Employees have the option for unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework, according to the Office of Personnel Management. Non-emergency employees will be granted excused absence up until offices open. If It Snows Friday: Cold Temps Would Make for Icy Slick Roads

This week's stretch of sub-freezing weather could be coldest in 10 years, according to NBC4's metereologist.

If snow predictions hold for Northern Virginia Friday, even a half-inch of it combined with the low temperatures could "cause problems for the roads," NBC4 metereologist Doug Kammerer said Tuesday night on the evening's 11 p.m. newscast. The high on Friday is forecast to be 29 degrees with a 70 percent chance of snow, according to The Weather Channel.  The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang agrees: "...even 1-3 inches of snow at these sub-freezing temperatures would cause potential driving problems." Northern Virginia could see snow flurries Wednesday night as a "clipper system" moves through into Thursday morning.

National Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Watch

The storm watch begins Thursday morning.

Update 2:30 p.m. Thursday: The Winter Weather Advisory for the Washington area has been canceled. -- The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather storm watch for the Fairfax County area which will be in effect Thursday morning until late Thursday night. Heavy snow is expected during this time, accumulating to an estimated five inches. Snow may mix with rain earlier in the day and will become heavier throughout the afternoon. Snowfall is expected to end Thursday night. Temperatures will be in the lower 30s, and winds are expected to be northwest 5 to 10 mph and gusts up to 20 mph. The light snow on Christmas Eve hinted at the possibility of a white Christmas, but it did not happen. A sunny and clear Christmas day enticed many folks to get a bit of exercise at Green Spring Gardens. Real winter weather arrived Wednesday with snow and sleet that stuck to cars, roads, walkways and rooftops.

Snow and Cold: What's in Store for DC this Winter

El Niño didn't really form, making predictions difficult for meteorlogists.

This week’s forecast calls for a potential "wintry mix" north and west of the city, but the relatively early snowfall doesn't indicate anything for the winter weeks ahead, according to forecasters. Some meteorologists are calling for an “average” winter in terms of snowfall, but some say there could be higher-than-average amounts of the white stuff. “During an El Niño winter we can see some heavy snows and some cool temperatures here in the mid-Atlantic," ABC7 meteorologist Matt Stinneford told WTOP.
