Measures to more clearly mark entrances for drivers were implemented overnight.
In response to multiple accidents and driver confusion at the northbound entrance to the Express Lanes, the Virginia Department of Transportation implemented improved signage and lane markings overnight ahead of Tuesday morning's commute. Crews added dotted lines heading north from the Springfield Interchange about a mile south of the current entrance to the Express Lanes, making it more clear to drivers that the two left lanes will become Express Lanes. Solid lines that warn drivers heading north from the Springfield Interchange not to merge into the lanes were also extended 700 feet further south than they were originally. “We want to remind all drivers to remain alert and aware of the new traffic patterns on the Capital Beltway,” said …

High occupancy toll lanes were originally scheduled to open in December.
Local commuters could be getting to work faster even sooner than originally thought. The I-495 Express Lanes could open as early as Nov. 17, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday. The high occupancy toll lanes were originally scheduled to open in December. The 14-mile stretch of highway-within-a-highway allows commuters to pay a toll (or carpool and avoid the toll) to use express lanes between the Springfield interchange and just north of the Dulles Toll Road. The first of three express buses will run from Burke to Tysons. Routes from Lorton and Springfield set for next spring.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved Tuesday a series of express bus routes to Tysons Corner. The service will use the nearly completed I-495 Express Lanes to shuttle commuters from the Burke Centre Virginia Railway Express (VRE), Lorton VRE and Springfield VRE stations to Tysons. The three bus routes are expected to run every 15 minutes during rush hours, and one-way fares are expected to cost between $3.65 and $5.35. Final fare and schedule details will be decided in the fall. “These new bus routes are a great step in the effort to reduce congestion on our roads and provide more transportation alternatives for our residents.” Chairman Bulova said in a statement. “People taking advantage of this new opportunity will enjoy a …

Cars are driving on the I-495 Express Lanes this week to test the toll and traffic-management technology.
Testing of the I-495 Express Lanes’ tolling and traffic management technology began this week, and officials say it’s going off without a hitch so far. “Everything has been going as expected,” said Transurban-Fluor Marketing Director Pierce Coffee. “It’s running really smoothly.” This week, Beltway commuters might have noticed cars traveling in the Express Lanes, which are expected to open in December 2012. Transurban and VDOT officials want everyday drivers to know that they shouldn’t follow these cars into the faster lanes – they’re only making test-drives. Coffee said these tests, which will have cars traveling at highway speeds from around the Gallows Road Interchange to Route 123 in Tysons Corner, will ensure that the lanes’ many …
